Ants Costa Rica

Atta cephalotes (known as “zampopo” or “zompopa”) is one of the forty-one species of leafcutter ants. This species belongs to the tribe Attini (ants that cultivate fungi). A colony of these ants can consist of up to five million individuals, and each colony has a queen that can live for more than fifteen years. We are a family project committed to the study, teaching and protection of the environment through sustainability in order to ensure a better future for all, we are located in the beautiful humid tropical forest of the northern area of Sarapiquí, Costa Rica.

In 2006, research began on Leaf Cutter Ants (Atta Cephalotes) also known as “Zompopas” thus becoming two years later a tourist attraction focused on the education and research.

During the tour you can closely observe the laborious work of the process to cutting and moving the leaves to their colony where you can appreciate how the activities may seem the simplest are a
