
Sarapiqui River
The Sarapiquí River is a river in Costa Rica, belonging to the northern sub-slope of the slope of the Caribbean Sea. It has a length of 85 km, its source is located in the northern foothills of the Central Volcanic mountain range, in the Botos lagoon of the Poás volcano, to which it provides drainage, and pours its waters into the San Juan river, which flows into the sea Caribbean. Among its main tributaries are the Sucio River and the Toro River.
The Sarapiqui River
The name Sarapiquí would be a translation into Spanish of the aboriginal name of the river given by the Botos: Yori River.
The area around the river is mostly lowlands tropical rainforest, having lush vegetation with a large variety of plant, animal and insect life. This river is navigable and is a local trading artery, and also supports fishing and tourism activity.
Around the river are plantations of coffee, sugar cane, bananas and cocoa trees.
An important fact that makes it stand out and of great importance in our history is that it was the first point of contact between the European continent.
The river is considered a national monument because of the vital service it provided in transporting arms, goods and soldiers in the 1856 war against the filibusters.
